Decide for Yourself

Carousel Films & Communications served as story doctor to "Rebel," a documentary that will premiere this evening on PBS. It tells the story of Loreta Janeta Velazquez, who may have been one of 1,000 women who posted as men to serve in the Civil War. When filmmaker Maria Agui Carter first heard about the story, she thought it was so dramatic that it must be fiction. In fact, historians are divided about the precise role Velazquez played in the Civil War, leading The Washington Post to call the documentary "artful but controversial."

The Post states: "No doubt there were women who fought as soldiers in the Union and the Confederacy. There also should be little doubt that Velasquez existed. As to this special presentation of the Latino Public Broadcasting series 'Voices on PBS,' decide for yourself if Velazquez really was who she says she was."
